After the red light.

An empty recording studio with an analog console, illuminated meters, a microphone, and warm lamplight.
S. E. Lane for American Journal

The session is over. The chair has been pushed back, and the microphone is still where someone left it.

A little light remains in the meters. Beyond the glass, the control room is darker. Without a voice in the headphones, you notice how quiet the room can be.

In a while, somebody will sit down, draw the microphone closer, and ask if everything is ready. For now, the chair stays empty. The room has a little time to itself.
